Example Questions about Languages
1. How many languages can you speak? [Why/Why not?]
I can speak two languages fluently: English and my native language, Hindi. Growing up in India, Hindi was the primary language we spoke at home, but English was also introduced to me at an early age through school. I’ve always found learning languages fascinating, but I haven’t had the chance to formally learn any others. I’d love to learn a new language in the future if I get the opportunity.
2. How useful will English be to you in your future? [Why/Why not?]
English will be extremely useful for me in the future, especially because I plan to pursue higher education abroad. Most international universities use English as the primary medium of instruction, and being proficient in the language will help me not only in academics but also in communicating with people from different cultures. Furthermore, English is widely used in the professional world, so it will definitely be an advantage for my career.
3. What do you remember about learning languages at school? [Why/Why not?]
I remember learning both English and Hindi at school. English was taught as a second language, and I found it quite challenging at first, especially the grammar rules and vocabulary. However, over time, I improved by practicing through reading and writing exercises. Learning Hindi was easier since it was my native language, and it came more naturally to me. Both languages were integral to my education, and I enjoyed learning them.
4. What do you think would be the hardest language for you to learn? [Why?]
I think Mandarin would be the hardest language for me to learn. It has a completely different script, which is very unlike the Latin alphabet that I’m familiar with. Additionally, Mandarin is a tonal language, meaning the tone in which a word is spoken can change its meaning. Since I’ve never been exposed to a tonal language, I imagine mastering both the tones and the script would be quite difficult for me.

You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. And you have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
Sample Answer:
One of the websites I frequently use for online shopping is Amazon. It’s a global e-commerce platform where you can buy almost anything, from electronics to clothing. Recently, I purchased a noise-canceling headset from this website because I needed it for work and study purposes, especially when I’m in a noisy environment.
The process of buying the product was smooth. I found various options with detailed descriptions and customer reviews, which helped me make a more informed decision. I received the headset in just a couple of days, and the delivery was timely, as always.
As for my satisfaction, I was extremely pleased with the purchase. The quality of the headset exceeded my expectations; the sound is crisp, and the noise-canceling feature works perfectly. It’s really improved my focus while studying. Overall, I would say I’m highly satisfied with both the product and the experience I had with Amazon.

Additionally, there’s a growing trend of purchasing furniture and appliances online because of the extensive choices and competitive pricing offered by these platforms.
2. Why do you think online shopping has become so popular nowadays?
I believe online shopping has become popular due to several reasons. First and foremost, it offers convenience; people can shop from the comfort of their homes without having to visit physical stores. Secondly, there is often a wider variety of products available online, including exclusive deals that may not be found in stores. Moreover, online shopping saves time, and many websites offer quick delivery options, which appeals to people with busy lifestyles. Finally, the ability to compare prices and read customer reviews helps consumers make better purchasing decisions.
3. What are some possible disadvantages of buying things from online shops?
While online shopping has its benefits, there are some disadvantages as well. One major issue is that you cannot physically inspect the product before purchasing it, which can sometimes lead to disappointment if the item doesn’t meet your expectations. Additionally, there is always the risk of receiving damaged or incorrect products, which can be frustrating. Another concern is the lack of immediate gratification, as buyers have to wait for delivery. Security concerns such as fraud and identity theft are also potential risks when shopping online.

1. Why do many people today keep buying things which they do not need?
I think many people buy things they don’t need because of the influence of advertising and social media. Companies often use persuasive marketing techniques to make products appear more desirable, leading people to purchase items impulsively. Social media influencers also play a role by promoting various products, making people feel like they need to own the latest trends. Additionally, the convenience of online shopping encourages people to make spontaneous purchases. Sometimes, people buy things as a way to cope with stress or boredom, even if the items are unnecessary.
2. Do you believe the benefits of a consumer society outweigh the disadvantages?
It’s difficult to say definitively whether the benefits of a consumer society outweigh the disadvantages. On the one hand, a consumer-driven economy stimulates growth, creates jobs, and offers individuals access to a wide variety of products that enhance their quality of life. On the other hand, excessive consumerism can lead to waste, environmental degradation, and a focus on materialism. Additionally, the pressure to constantly buy new things can result in financial strain for many people. Ultimately, while there are clear advantages, I believe we should strive for a balance to avoid the negative consequences.
3. How possible is it to avoid the culture of consumerism?
Avoiding the culture of consumerism is quite challenging, especially in today’s world where we are constantly bombarded with advertisements and exposed to consumer-driven media. However, it is possible on an individual level if people become more mindful of their consumption habits and focus on purchasing only what they truly need. Many people are also embracing minimalism and sustainable living, which helps them distance themselves from unnecessary purchases. Governments and businesses can also play a role by promoting responsible consumption and sustainability, which could help shift societal values away from excessive consumerism.
